Shri Sanjeev Sharma, an IRS officer of the 1989 batch, retired as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, New Delhi, in September 2023. He completed his Master of Engineering from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) in 1986 and his LL.M. in International Tax Law from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), Vienna, Austria, in 2006. He also participated in the German Government-organized "Managing Global Governance Programme" in Bonn in 2009. With 33 years of experience in tax administration, he has primarily dealt with taxation of multinational enterprises and large domestic taxpayers, specializing in transfer pricing, international taxation, investigation, and dispute resolution. He served as an Advance Pricing Arrangement Commissioner for six years. From 2010 to 2013, Shri Sharma worked as an Advisor to the Secretariat of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris for 39 months, contributing significantly to OECD's work on tax transparency, exchange of information, and removal of banking secrecy for tax purposes. He also served as Special Advisor to the Public Revenue Office of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Government of Sierra Leone under the Tax Inspectors Without Borders programme of the UNDP/OECD. The International Tax Review (ITR) recognized him as the Asia-Pacific Tax Official of the Year 2021. The Government of India conferred upon him the "Anubhav Award 2024" for sharing his outstanding and inspiring experiences in Government service.
