Shri Sanjay Puri is a distinguished former civil servant with a prolific career spanning over three decades in public service, particularly in taxation and corporate law. He has demonstrated extensive experience and a proven track record of excellence, making significant contributions at both national and international platforms. Shri Puri retired in June 2023 as Principal Director General of the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), Nagpur, after completing a remarkable 36-year tenure in the Indian Revenue Service. Throughout his illustrious career, he held various pivotal positions in the Income Tax Department, demonstrating exceptional leadership and expertise in tax assessment, international taxation, and anti-corruption measures. His public service extended beyond national borders through contributions to tax administrations in Botswana, Tanzania, and Afghanistan. His international engagements include serving as a Senior Advisor on DFID-funded projects and as a Consultant for USAID, where he played a crucial role in tax administration reforms and capacity-building initiatives. As a tax expert, Shri Puri represented the Government of India before the International Court of Justice, The Hague. His expertise has been recognized globally through invitations to prestigious seminars and conferences. He has served as a keynote speaker, panellist, and participant in events organized by the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA), the International Fiscal Association, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Shri Puri holds a Master of Science degree in International Policy Analysis from the University of Bath, UK, and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Delhi University. He completed the Indian Revenue Service Induction Course and received the Finance Minister's Gold Medal for exceptional performance. As a policy maker and thought leader, he has authored articles and papers on taxation, contributing significantly to academic discourse and policy formulation. His dissertation for the University of Bath addressed India's response to cross-border electronic commerce. Post-retirement, Shri Sanjay Puri was appointed as Member (Technical) at the National Company Law Tribunal.
